Anti-Semitism in the U.S.
Abstract:
As a Jewish teen living in America in the 21st century, I am concerned about the well being of my immediate and greater religious community. Through research, I found that there are a variety of threats from all different angles, yet all target Jews. Many white supremesists and nationalists are anti-Semitic and have caused disturbances. Additionally, there have been several other empowering groups like neo-Nazis, who have marched and spread their hateful beliefs around the nation. Social media has aided the rapid dissemination of bigotry too. This research aimed to identify the source of Jewish hatred so it can be ceased.
Reflection:
In the past five years there has been an influx of anti-Semitic incidences in the United States. As stated in my paper, “Throughout 2018, there were 785 anti-Semitic incidences reported, but in just the first six months of 2019, there were already 780 anti-Semitic incidences (abc news-White Supremesists Arrested ).” Anti-Semitic acts have become epidemic and cause a large threat to Jewish communities around the nation. I am most passionate about learning more on how as a country we can move forward and make anti-Semtism a term of the past. As an assistant in a Jewish Sunday school, I find it critical to educate both children and adults on the situation. I also think it is crucial to educate non-Jews on current anti-Semitic acts, as well as events from the past so historical events like the Holocaust are not repeated. After thorough research, I was most surprised to learn thatUIKEYINPUTDOWNARROW many anti-Semitic acts recently, weren’t from people who affiliate with extremists from the right or left sides of the political spectrum, such as white supremesists or nationalists, but rather other empowering groups uniting against Jews. Oren Segal, director of the ADL Center on Extremism, said that “most anti-Semitic incidents are carried out by average Joes and average Janes.” Anti-Semitimic views are spreading like wildfire, with fuel from the internet and social media. This crisis was very interesting to learn about because it impacts my daily life as a practicing Jew in America.
